if i want a dialog box program that is installed by default in nearly all the major linux distros and can run on posix compatible shells, which should it be? dialog? whiptail? xxxx? thanks.

Nope, there is no such thing as a POSIX-compliant dialog box program, so I'd say use the one you like the most.

You can't be sure of it, since there's no POSIX standard concerning this.
So the best thing to do is to check which ones are the most used.

Sure, it'll work in all shells, but not on every system; that's the issue.

I think it's safe to assume that the most used are (x)dialog(1), whiptail(1), and zenity(1).
