Hi All. I took a look through the messages posted here and didn't find what I was looking for. I'm trying to find a way to script a graphical environment in bash. I know it can be done in Perl or Python, but unfortunately I don't have the experience in those languages as I do in bash.

I've used Xdialog in the past (and present) but am looking for something a bit prettier. The ability to use True Type fonts, for instance would be nice. Multiple graphical and widgets instead of just sticking with "radiolist" or "checklist", and having some graphics in the window as well, would be real nice.

Additionally, it would be super coll if it could run in a console with framebuffers, not even loading X. But, if it had to run under X, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to listen.

I used Xdialog for awhile too, but Xdialog appears not to work the same from system to system. I've given up on it. I'm not aware of any other projects like it, I too would be interested in any findings for this.

Crouse, If you can't get Xdialog to work consistently there are many "clones" or drop-ins for it.

cdialog:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/cdialog

gdialog:
http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl1_gdialog.htm

kdialog:
http://developer.kde.org/documentation/ ... og/t1.html

gtkdialog:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/gtkdialog/

I haven't played with many alternatives because they all seem to provide pretty much the same functionality as Xdialog or dialog.<p>

I may have to take another look at gtkdialog though.

Displays user-friendly dialog boxes from shell scripts
http://packages.debian.org/stable/base/whiptail

Whiptail is a "dialog" replacement using newt instead of ncurses. It provides a method of displaying several different types of dialog boxes from shell scripts. This allows a developer of a script to interact with the user in a much friendlier manner.
