Hello everyone!

I have been looking into bash scripting lately as a good way to start learning programming. I use linux at home and at work and bash scripting looks handy! I've done some reading and basic tutorials, but all the tutorials that I can find jump from the basic "Hello World!" type of script to these elaborate and out of my league scripts. Is there no middle ground? I am VERY eager to learn and create a useful script for myself and others, but find myself completely lost beyond writing a script that greps a log file or echo's something humorous. PLEASE HELP ME TO LEARN!

Thanks,

DeX

Welcome Dex!

I've found that the best way to learn is by looking at other people's scripts (preferrably well commented ones) and reading up on each part that I don't already understand. The community here is extremely helpful too, so let us know if you have any problems!

thanks folks! I have read the beginners guide and I will start reading some other scripts. I have a feeling that my linux knowledge is lacking more than I thought. There are a ton of commands that I'm simply not yet familiar with. Thanks for the replies!

It's like, have you ever been using Windows, and doing the same repetitive pointing and clicking over and over and thought "Man I wish I could automate this!". Well with Linux and Bash, you can! For just 4 easy installments of... wait... sorry... I started to feel like an infomercial for a second there :)

haha...yeah, thats why i'm drawn to the idea of bash. I've done a little bit with python before, but the structure is quite different.
